Surviving Your First Canadian Winter: What to Actually Buy

If you're coming from a warm climate, "winter" can mean something you've genuinely never experienced. Here's what matters, and what's a waste of money.

Know your city first

• Vancouver/Victoria: Mild and rainy. A good waterproof jacket and shoes matter more than a heavy parka.
• Toronto/Ottawa/Montreal: Real cold, real snow. You need the full kit below.
• Winnipeg/the Prairies: Some of the coldest winters in the country — don't underbuy here.

The essentials (for anywhere with real winter)

1. A proper winter coat rated for actual cold, not just a stylish jacket. Look for a warmth rating or fill weight, not just the brand.
2. Waterproof, insulated boots. Wet, cold feet ruin your whole day — this is not the place to cut corners.
3. A warm hat that covers your ears, plus gloves and a scarf or neck warmer.
4. Thermal base layers — worn under regular clothes, these do more for warmth than one thick sweater.

Where to buy it without overspending

• Thrift stores and used gear shops near campus, especially at the start and end of winter, are full of barely-used coats and boots from students who've graduated.
• Student Facebook/marketplace groups for your school often have a rush of winter gear listings in September/October.
• Wait for sales if you can — big retailers discount winter gear heavily in late winter for the following year, if you're planning ahead.

Small things that make a big difference

• Lip balm and moisturizer — indoor heating plus cold outdoor air dries out skin fast.
• A reusable hot water bottle or hand warmers for the coldest weeks.
• Layering, not one thick layer — it's easier to adjust for indoor heating vs. outdoor cold.
